Dressed in vibrant traditional clothing, crowds fill the peaceful valleys to honor Buddhist heritage. The festival commemorates Guru Rinpoche’s sacred meditation and ritual circumambulation at this blessed location. Ghomphu, meaning ‘Meditation Cave.’ Visitors discover a remarkable spiritual treasure: the saint’s impression miraculously preserved upon the rock face, offering a tangible connection to Bhutan’s ancient Buddhist traditions. DAY 1 Arrive Paro-Thimphu

Flying into Paro reveals stunning Himalayan mountain scenery. After landing, visit the 1646-built fort housing government offices, cross a wooden bridge, and explore the museum’s art collection in the former watchtower. Tour Kichu Lhakhang, the nation’s oldest temple, before traveling to Thimphu for your overnight stay.

DAY 2 Thimphu

Begin your morning at the serene King’s Memorial Chorten, then visit Buddha Point and Changgangkha Monastery. Ascend to the viewpoint tower for sweeping valley vistas. Meet Bhutan’s unique national animal, the takin, before exploring the peaceful nunnery, National Library with its treasured manuscripts, and the Arts and Crafts School. Following lunch, discover traditional medicine practices, observe handmade paper creation, and admire the magnificent Tashichodzong. Overnight in Thimphu.

DAY 3 Thimphu – Punakha

Journey over Dochu-La pass at 3,100 meters, where clear skies reveal majestic Himalayan peaks, before descending into warm Punakha valley. Explore Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness,” built in 1637. Walk through peaceful rice fields to visit Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten on a scenic hillock. Continue to Metshina Village and the fertility temple, Chime Lhakhang, where blessings are offered. Overnight in Punakha.

DAY 04 Punakha to Gangtey

Journey to Gangtey, pausing at Wangdue Dzong, where legend tells of four auspicious ravens. Travel through oak and rhododendron forests to peaceful Gangtey village and visit the region’s only Nyingmapa monastery. Admire the Black Mountain range and serene Phobjikha Valley, winter home to rare black-necked cranes migrating from Tibet. Optional hour-long hike available. Overnight in Gangtey.

DAY 5 Gangtey – Trongsa – Bumthang

Depart early for Bumthang, stopping at the impressive Trongsa Dzong, ancestral home of Bhutan’s Royal Family. Cross Yotongla pass at 3,400 meters, visiting the wool project in Chumey valley to observe traditional weaving and browse handcrafted textiles. Watch for yaks grazing the high passes as you wind down into beautiful Bumthang valley, Bhutan’s cultural heartland. Overnight in Bumthang.

DAY 6 Bumthang Sightseeing

Explore Jakar Dzong, the “Castle of White Bird,” and 18th-century Lamey Goemba monastery. Visit ancient Jambay Lhakhang, built in 659, where sacred treasures are said to lie hidden beneath. After lunch, discover Chakhar Lhakhang’s historic palace site and Tamshing Lhakhang, established in 1501 as the kingdom’s most significant Nyingmapa temple. Conclude at Membarstho, “The Burning Lake.” Overnight in Bumthang.

DAY 7 Bumthang – Mongar

Journey to Mongar with a packed lunch along the way, passing through countryside dotted with traditional Bhutanese farmhouses. Upon arrival, visit the modest Mongar Dzong, thoughtfully rebuilt in 1953. The dzong is home to approximately 50 to 60 monks, including many young boys beginning their spiritual education. DAY 8 Mongar – Trashiyangtse

Begin your morning with a scenic drive to Trashiyangtse. Upon arrival, visit the beautiful Chorten Kora, an important pilgrimage site, and explore the historic Trashiyangtse Dzong, which overlooks the valley below. DAY 9 Gom Kora Festival

Travel to Gom Kora to experience the vibrant local festival and its colorful celebrations. In the afternoon, continue to Trashigang to explore the impressive Trashigang Dzong perched above the valley and browse the bustling local market, where you can observe daily life in eastern Bhutan. Overnight in Trashigang.

DAY 10 Trashigang –Bumthang

Following breakfast, embark on a scenic journey back to Bumthang, traveling through verdant landscapes and lush forests. Enjoy the changing scenery as you wind through mountain passes and peaceful valleys, taking in the natural beauty of Bhutan’s eastern region. Overnight in Bumthang.

DAY 11 Bumthang-Thimphu

Begin your day early with breakfast before the long drive back to Thimphu. As evening approaches, enjoy leisurely browsing the local handicraft shops, where artisans display traditional textiles, woodwork, and handmade treasures. This is a wonderful opportunity to find meaningful souvenirs and support local craftspeople. Overnight in Thimphu.

DAY 12 Thimphu-Paro Hike Paro Taksang

Journey to Paro and hike to the sacred Taktsang Monastery, ascending approximately two hours through beautiful mountain trails (horses available if needed). Later, visit the reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong, originally built to commemorate victory over Tibetan invaders in 1644. Enjoy an evening stroll through charming Paro town and market. Celebrate with a farewell dinner featuring traditional dance. Overnight in Paro.

DAY 13 Depart Paro
