Day 01: Arrive Paro Airport And Drive To Thimphu

Fly into Paro International Airport, complete your visa formalities, and meet your guide for the transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. En route, pass through forested mountains dotted with monasteries and lhakhangs, arriving in Thimphu at 2,334 meters in the Wang Chu Valley. Enjoy a gentle walk through the city, visiting museums and chortens to gain insight into Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage, before retiring for the night at Amankora Thimphu.

Day 02: Explore Thimphu Valley

Explore Thimphu Valley, home to the seat of Bhutan’s royal government. Visit a monastic astrology academy and take an invigorating walk across one of Bhutan’s oldest cantilever bridges to Cheri Goemba, the site of the kingdom’s first monastic community. Meet monks at this hilltop monastery, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, and take part in an intimate incense offering ceremony.
Later, visit iconic landmarks such as Thimphu Tashichho Dzong, or stroll through the Authentic Bhutanese Craft Bazaar to purchase genuine Bhutanese souvenirs.

Day 03: Thimphu To Punakha Journey

Drive across Dochu La Pass (10,000 feet), where, weather permitting, you may catch views of the snow-capped peaks of the eastern Himalayas. The pass is adorned with hundreds of colorful fluttering prayer flags and dotted with Buddhist shrines, creating a truly striking sight. Continue to Punakha, the winter seat of Bhutan’s highest lama.

Visit the thriving Sangchen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery and the village of Talo, home to the temple of the Queen Mother’s protective deity. Enjoy a traditional lunch with a local family before returning to Amankora Punakha, where you can relax with a dip in the infinity pool set among the scenic rice terraces.

Day 04: Punakha Exploration

In the morning, hike along the Mo River through terraced rice paddies to a chorten built by the Queen Mother.
Enjoy a picnic on the riverbanks near the royal family’s winter residence before visiting the magnificent Punakha Dzong and the 15th-century fertility temple. According to legend, the Divine Mad Monk subdued the demoness of Dochu La here with his “Magic Thunderbolt of Wisdom.” A wooden effigy of the thunderbolt is preserved in the lhakhang, and childless women visit the temple to receive a Wang (blessing) from the saint.

Day 05: Punakha To Paro

In the morning, drive to Paro, winding through the scenic Wang and Paro river valleys to Amankora Paro, nestled among pine forests. Explore nearby ruins and some of the valley’s oldest and most sacred religious sites. In the evening, enjoy a lecture, participate in prayer flag printing, or experience a traditional cultural performance.

Day 06: Paro Cultural Pursuit

Visit the National Museum to discover artifacts dating back to 4000 BCE. Continue to Kichu and Dumtseg Temples for a deeper cultural exploration of Bhutan.

After lunch, drive above the town of Bondey to a trailhead and enjoy a 40-minute walk to Dzongdrakha, a small 16th-century monastery and retreat center overlooking Paro Valley. Built by the first local king, Chogay Dragpa, it is one of five monasteries in the area. A stupa on-site carries fascinating legends linked to its construction.

The remainder of the afternoon is free to relax or enjoy some shopping.

In the morning, hike to Tiger’s Nest, one of Bhutan’s most revered ancient sites. Marvel at the breathtaking views from the monastery, perched 900 meters above the valley floor, before returning to your lodge for a restful evening.
